Independence Day’s Freedom from Tithing

Independence marked the end of 10% of your resources belonging to the church including livestock, seeds, fruit and, of course, money.  The items from this tithing were stored at La Casa la-casa-del-diezmodel Diezmo on the street named Jesus.  The funds were used to support the clergy and the vast array of churches here in San Miguel.

Today the churches earn money from donations and service fees for weddings, baptisms, funerals and alike.  When tithing was enforced, these services were free.

La Casa del Diezmo is now a restaurant featuring Yucatan cuisine and the best gingerbread pancakes in town.
